Fortunoff Backyard Store has expanded regionally with a 9,400-square foot commitment at Somerset Shopping Center in Bridgewater, New Jersey. Levin Management Corporation was chosen as exclusive leasing and managing agent to secure this lease agreement.
Fortunoff’s Oxford Valley location marks their fourth Pennsylvania store and 36th overall, offering a comprehensive selection of higher-end outdoor furniture such as all-weather wicker, cast or extruded aluminum and solid teak wood furniture.
The Fortunoff Story
Fortunoff family business was an iconic part of New York life, known for quality, selection, and service. Their stores offered unique combinations of fine jewelry, home and outdoor furnishings, tabletop products and gifts–something for every generation to enjoy at Fortunoff stores. Parents, grandparents and children were welcomed by knowledgeable sales associates with friendly smiles.
Helene Fortunoff was a groundbreaking figure for women in retailing and the jewelry industry, Esther noted. She led an initiative to establish standards for full disclosure of gemstone enhancements and weights – “something which was an extremely controversial matter at that time”. “This was quite revolutionary at its time”, Esther commented.
She advocated for fair and equitable pay for women, offering split shifts and flextime arrangements to working mothers. In her free time she served on various nonprofit boards as trustee and chairman – including being past chair of Hofstra University’s board of trustees.
As she took over the company after her husband’s death in 2000, she immersed herself in its finances and regularly visited stores. She renovated parts of Fifth Avenue store to feature antique and silver giftware; expanded bridal and gift registry services; began selling jewelry designed by women designers; as well as offering benefits such as maternity leave and child care for working mothers to female employees.
At its height, Fortunoff’s had stores in Westbury and White Plains in New York; an iconic Fifth Avenue location; Paramus, Wayne, and Woodbridge in New Jersey; plus outdoor furniture like five-piece patio sets and charbroil barbecue grills were popular draws at its suburban stores.
Fortunoff Brand was initially sold off in 2005, but was later repurchased by its family members in 2009. Since then, the family has run two distinct businesses under this brand name: Fortunoff Backyard Store and Fortunoff Jewelry. Fortunoff is known for providing exceptional value; their New Jersey backyard store even provides price match guarantee on items (excluding clearance or floor sample merchandise)! Furthermore, they honor manufacturer warranties on behalf of their customers.
