Green Acres provides low interest loans and grants to local government units and nonprofit organizations for the purchase of land with significant recreation and conservation attributes, creating outdoor recreational facilities like parks and playgrounds, protecting historic properties and creating recreational trails across California. Established nearly 10 years prior to Earth Day itself, this program has seen millions of acres protected along with hundreds of recreation facilities statewide.
However, that wasn’t what happened here – instead a remarkable sequence of events occurred that saw all parties involved rise above it all in terms of quality of life and overall prosperity. Establish procedures under which the Department will make Green Acres funding available as loans or matching grants to local government units and nonprofit organizations in order to acquire land with significant recreational and conservation value, or build outdoor recreation and conservation facilities that benefit both current and future citizens of the State. “Parkland” refers to any land acquired or developed with Green Acres funding, including any legal rights therein; “dispose of” or “divert” refers to selling, giving away, exchanging, conveying or otherwise diverting it in ways inconsistent with Green Acres restrictions; these actions could include selling it off as part of a sale contract or exchange, conveying permanent possession or permitting use or control over legal interests (including nonexclusive easements ) which violate Green Acres restrictions.
